OSHA publishes safety information on launching gantry cranes

June 26, 2006—The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has published a new Safety and Health Information Bulletin on its Web site to highlight specific workplace hazards. OSHA’s Toledo, Ohio, Area Office recently investigated a fatal accident involving the collapse, during a launch sequence, of an overhead launching gantry crane used during segmental bridge construction.

The Overhead Launching Gantry Crane bulletin outlines specific methods for workers and employers to address the hazards of using these cranes, and to prevent future accidents.
