April 21, 2003—The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recognized Skanska USA Building Inc., Parsippany, New Jersey, on April 2 for its outstanding safety and health program at the Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Headquarters Construction Site in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.
OSHA designated the project a STAR site in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program, and commended Skanska USA for the diligence it has shown through its subcontractor safety program, its engineering controls, and scaffolding safety procedures.
Skanska USA is serving as construction manager, overseeing Phase II of the project, which involves the construction of several buildings connected by a common spine and the erection of an 1160-car, three-level parking structure.
The site is noted for having three-year recordable injuries and lost workday rates that are 75 and 90 percent below the industry average respectively.
The STAR program, designed for worksites with comprehensive, successful, safety and health programs, is open to any industry and to companies with injury and illness rates below the industry’s national average. The Voluntary Protection Program is OSHA’s premier recognition program designed to promote effective safety and health management by employers.
