June 7, 2004—PECO Energy (an electric and natural gas utility subsidiary of Exelon Corporation), wind energy supplier Community Energy and environmental groups, have just launched PECO WIND, Pennsylvania’s first utility-offered wind energy product.
PECO WIND is now available to residential and business customers in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia, and York counties. Already more than 500 residential customers have signed up for PECO WIND, and local business customers have also shown strong support.
It is estimated that the purchase of 200 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of PECO WIND has the same environmental benefit as eliminating the emissions produced during 2,284 miles of driving or planting 179 trees. A 115-foot fiberglass wind turbine blade will be used, just as at other wind farms in Pennsylvania.
PECO WIND is offered in 100 kWh blocks for an additional monthly fee of about $2.50 per block, added directly to customers’ monthly PECO bill. According to Community Energy, the more customers who sign up, the more wind energy comes online, and the greater the energy and environmental benefits.
