PA DEP breaks ground for third “green” office building

June 26, 2002—The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently broke ground for DEP’s third “green” office building—a facility built with materials that are selected based on their recycled content and the energy used to produce them, including recycled structural steel and roofing shingles, fly-ash-content concrete, and paint and adhesives made of low or no volatile organic compounds.

The project, located in California, Pa., is part of the state’s promotion of green-building techniques and design, which was outlined in the Governor’s Energy Task Force report.

The California office is being modeled after the recently dedicated Cambria office in Ebensburg, Pa., which was the first building in the United States to receive the US Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Rating.

Pennsylvania is fourth in the nation in the number of projects registered with USGBC to seek LEED certification.
