March 9, 2007—In a realm traditionally dominated by CAD, one small GIS company says it is changing the way people think about information inside the building. Penobscot Bay Media LLC ( Pen Bay ), a geographic information systems services firm, has published a new “GIS Data Model for Interior Spaces.”
This model serves as a foundation for advanced geospatial application development related to the built environment, says the company. Pen Bay has published this benchmark with the hopes of collaborating with other GIS professionals to establish and refine a standard for interior space designations, the company says.
The model supports analysis and reporting based on the Buildings Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) standards for floor plan definition as well as the Post-secondary Educational Facilities Inventory and Classification Manual (FICM) standard, popular in the academic facility world. As such, the data model includes full attribution for form, function and assignment of a space, supporting analysis and visualization in both 2D and 3D. The model also provides the scalable capability to model n-tier organizational hierarchy, necessary for large corporate entities and/or military organizations.
