November 19, 2001—Pennsylvania state legislative representatives met with architects, developers, builders, and fire and building code enforcement personnel to review the question of a “rehab” building code for the state. AIA Pennsylvania and 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania jointly hosted the meeting in Harrisburg, following their successful efforts to pass legislation requiring a statewide building code based on the International Building Code (IBC).
Representatives of AIAs Codes Advocacy Program (CAP) and the State of Marylands Rehabilitation Code were invited to discuss the current atmosphere of rehabilitation code development. The history of the existing building code provisions in Chapter 34 of the IBC, the New Jersey Rehabilitation Subcode, and the current effort of the International Code Council (ICC) to develop the International Existing Building Code (IEBC) were reviewed.
Maryland has recently implemented the latest version of the rehabilitation codes that have been emerging along the East Coast over the past few years. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) supports comprehensive, coordinated performance codes wherever possible.
