September 24, 2003—Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell recently honored 39 Pennsylvania companies and organizations from 27 counties for their outstanding achievements in environmental protection by presenting them with the 2003 Governor’s Awards for Environmental Excellence.
Created in 1996, the awards honor organizations, businesses and individuals for positively impacting Pennsylvania’s environment. The awards are presented in five categories: energy efficiency, land use, education and outreach, resource protection and watershed stewardship.
“The recipients of this year’s awards have displayed innovation and commitment in their efforts to preserve and protect the Commonwealth’s environmental resources,” Gov. Rendell said. “Through the restoration and protection of watersheds, pollution prevention, waste reduction, and the more efficient use of raw materials, the accomplishments of this year’s winners improve the environment for the benefit of all Pennsylvanians.”
The Governor presented one of the winning plaques to the Village of the Arts and Humanities at a ceremony in Philadelphia. He also announced that the Village is the winner of this year’s Governor’s Award for Sustainability, which is presented to the winning company or organization that best embodies the three elements of sustainability: environmental improvement, economic development and positive social change.
