October 26, 2003—Pepco Holdings has identified approximately $70 million as its estimated costs stemming from storm restoration efforts following Hurricane Isabel. Of this, Pepco incurred about $40 million and Conectiv Power Delivery incurred about $30 million in costs. The majority of these costs will be capitalized; approximately $15 million will be expensed as operating costs.
As a result of the hurricane, nearly 80 percent of Pepco’s customers and 43 percent of Conectiv’s customers lost electricity. The devastation from the storm impacted a larger percentage of customers than any other natural disaster in the companies’ more than 100-year histories. To restore electricity after the storm, Pepco and Conectiv:
- At the peak of the restoration, had more than 1,600 total crews working in shifts to restore power. Many of these crews were on loan from other utilities, some from as far away as Kansas, Louisiana and Mississippi;
- Replaced 113.8 miles of wire and cable;
- Replaced 434 poles;
- Replaced 412 transformers.
