PepsiCo honored by Energy Star for sustained energy efficiency leadership

March 13, 2009—The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) have named PepsiCo a 2009 Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award winner for its continued leadership in protecting the environment through energy efficiency. PepsiCo’s accomplishments will be recognized at a March 31 awards ceremony in Washington, DC.

PepsiCo, an Energy Star partner since 2007, will be honored for its long-term commitment to energy efficiency. After more than a decade of action, the cumulative effects of PepsiCo’s resource conservation program have reportedly resulted in an improvement in energy efficiency for its US operations of nearly 30 percent. In 2008 alone, PepsiCo reduced energy costs by $90 million and cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 575,000 metric tons.

Through its Performance with Purpose commitment, PepsiCo has announced goals to reduce water consumption by 20 percent, reduce electricity consumption by 20 percent, and reduce fuels consumption by 25 percent per unit of production by 2015 as compared to 2006 consumption.

In addition, PepsiCo’s Resource Conservation Outreach Program has made tools and expertise available to the company’s contract manufacturers, franchise bottlers, and other key suppliers to encourage them to implement energy conservation programs in their operations.

The 2009 Sustained Excellence Awards are given only to organizations that have been named Energy Star Partner of the Year for three or more consecutive years. These winners have helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting and achieving aggressive goals, employing innovative approaches, and showing others what can be achieved through energy efficiency. Award winners are selected from more than 12,000 organizations participating in the voluntary EPA/DOE Energy Star program.
