Performance contract with Johnson Controls nets Kanawha schools $1.6 million in energy savings

March 19, 2003—Following a performance contract with Johnson Controls, Inc., Kanawha County Schools have chalked up more than $2 million in savings over six years, including $1.6 million in energy savings, and a reduction of more than 18,000 tons of harmful emissions.

Key elements of the project included installation of a district-wide computerized energy management network to efficiently operate equipment, upgrades that provide energy-efficient lighting in 50 schools, and replacement of worn-out and inefficient heating and air conditioning equipment. The school district, composed of 77 schools, is working with Johnson Controls to implement facility improvements that will be paid for during the 10-year contract by the energy savings they generate.

Kanawha County Schools began a dedicated effort to reduce energy consumption and improve facilities in 1987. Since that year the district has invested $7.45 million in its Energy Conservation and Building Improvement Program and has realized $11.8 million in savings during that same period. These results have earned the school system the EPA’s Energy Star “Honor Society” award.
