Philips Lighting incorporates “reduce, reuse, and recycle” into sustainable lighting approach

November 17, 2003—Royal Philips Electronics’ North American lighting division is integrating the “3 Rs” guideline set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Division of Solid Waste Management—”reduce, reuse, and recycle”—into its approach to sustainable lighting solutions.

  • Reduce: Philips ALTO fluorescent lamps combine the lowest mercury content with long life (50 percent longer than T8 lamps) and energy efficiency to achieve sustainability.
  • Reuse: ALTO lamps use 100 percent recycled mercury during the manufacturing process.
  • Recycle: Philips encourages recycling of all spent mercury-containing lamps at end of life, where permitted by law.

Philips Lighting is the first certified ISO 14001-compliant lighting manufacturer in the United States.
