PJM implements NERC-approved reliability coordination plan in four new

February 12, 2003—PJM Interconnection, administrator of the largest wholesale electricity market in the world and operator of the largest electric grid in North America, has assumed North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) grid reliability coordination responsibility for sections of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Michigan. PJM is already the reliability coordinator for all or parts of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

The regional councils in which PJM now coordinates are the Mid-Atlantic Area Council, the East Central Area Reliability Council, and the Mid-America Interconnected Network.

The responsibilities of a reliability coordinator include:

  • Transmission system security monitoring and analysis;
  • Initiation of measures to avoid transmission congestion;
  • Coordination of responses to emergency situations;
  • Implementation of reliability measures;
  • Approval of scheduling of transmission facilities; and
  • Coordination with other NERC approved reliability coordinators, recognizing each region’s policies and standards.
