July 12, 2004—PowerCold ComfortAir Solutions has expanded its product line and now offers Direct Digital Control systems with the Company’s patented HVAC packages for commercial buildings. Direct Digital Control systems, known as “DDC” systems, log electronic temperature measurements and compare them to the desired settings (set-points). The system then calculates an appropriate response if the two aren’t equal, and sends out new signals to correct for any difference.
Typically, DDC systems are approximately 10-15% of the total HVAC package.
PCS is currently installing DDC systems with several of its custom HVAC applications. These installations are expected to generate additional revenue in excess of $1,000,000 over the next twelve months.
Lake Sumter Community College in Leesburg, Florida is adding a PCS 1000 Dehumidification unit to their Fine Arts Building. This unit will dehumidify three classrooms affected by high humidity levels. As part of this unit, PCS’ new “OEMctrl” DDC system will be installed and integrated into the colleges existing building automation system.
Don Ball, Director of College Facilities at Lake Sumter, stated, “The issue of high humidity came to light in our Fine Arts Building immediately after we changed out all of the rooftop HVAC equipment. A number of solutions were proposed that included electric reheat, modification of the new equipment, and PowerCold’s dehumidification solution. It really came down to three things: initial cost, future cost, and the company that could provide the best solution. Based on these factors, PowerCold was the obvious choice.”
PCS is also designing a complete HVAC system with humidity control and a complete DDC and monitoring system for the River Wilderness Country Club in Parrish, Florida. The country club has been experiencing very high humidity and mold growth in various areas throughout the building. The facility was originally constructed with fiber duct board and standard split D/X HVAC equipment, which over the years has deteriorated. The new design will incorporate externally-wrapped metal duct work, registers, series fan powered VAV boxes with electric strip heat for humidity control, and two new split 100% outside air units. The two new dehumidification units will be fitted with OEMctrl DDC modules built into the units.
Using an open protocol communication standard makes it easier for control components manufactured by one company to interoperate with controls supplied with equipment or controls made by a different company. The ability to integrate products and systems from different manufacturers gives facility owners and managers newfound flexibility. Owners have the freedom to competitively bid expansions and additions, and select manufacturers that best meet the requirements of the project at the best price. Owners can select the most appealing technologies and services as they become available and gain investment protection because current systems can be expanded without replacing the entire system.
