Johnson, Rhode Island-based FM Global, a commercial and industrial property insurer, has found problems with some Central Sprinkler Model GB fire sprinkler systems manufactured prior to 2000 by the Lansdale, Pennsylvania-based company. Testing by FM Global indicated that some of the systems may not operate as designed because of corrosion and encrustation resulting from water leaking through the O-ring seals.
Further testing showed that all sprinklers did operate, although some required more water pressure than normal. So far, no GB sprinkler failures have been reported to FM Global, but the company recommends replacing sprinklers as soon as any encrustation or corrosion appears. Joseph Hankins, senior engineering specialist at FM Global affiliate Factory Mutual Research, emphasizes that FMs have no need to be concerned if no signs of corrosion, leakage, or encrustation are present.
Central’s O-rings were previously the cause of a potentially hazardous sprinkler system problem. Swollen O-rings blocked water flow during several building fires, causing Central’s Omega sprinklers to fail to activate. Central settled with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC), recalling the Omega systems and reimbursing the companies involved to help cover the cost of installing new sprinklers.
