Protective gloves affect grip force, increase risk of MSDs, shows research

June 10, 2002—New research by the University of Osaka, Japan, affirms that wearing protective gloves can cause workers to apply more force to what they are gripping, thereby putting them at higher risk for musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The amount of force is affected by the material of which the gloves are made, the size of the gloves, and the texture of the object being gripped. For a summary of the report, visit Ergonomics Today.
