Public power, environmental group team to launch energy efficiency initiative

July 2, 2008—The American Public Power Association (APPA) and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) recently announced a joint initiative designed “to help American households and businesses take advantage of all cost-effective opportunities to improve the efficiency of electricity use.”

The initiative will unite APPA’s 1,300 member utilities and NRDC’s 1.2 million members and activists in new efforts across the US to seize opportunities to get more work from less energy, including:

  • Supporting cost-effective improvements in efficiency standards for buildings and equipment;
  • Developing and promoting rate-setting policies and programs designed to achieve energy efficiency improvements while ensuring utilities’ financial integrity
  • Strengthening the nation’s energy efficiency infrastructure, including support for existing regional alliances and new university centers on energy efficiency
  • Helping APPA members pool resources to take advantage of industry-wide best practices employing energy efficiency as a productive and low-cost resource for publicly owned electricity systems.
