May 28, 2004—QTL Biosystems, LLC has announced an agreement for United First Responders LLC, of Fayette County, Pennsylvania to manufacture QTL’s handheld sensor to detect anthrax, ricin, and other potential bioterrorism pathogens. The system is designed for use by first responders, hospital triage personnel and military users. The rechargeable battery-powered handheld instrument and cartridges are designed for field use by users in full biohazard gear.

United First Responders is setting up manufacturing in North Union Township, Pennsylvania in a Keystone Opportunity Zone. United First Responders will work closely with QTL during the next six months to manufacture prototype and pre-production units to establish high quality production processes. United First Responders expects to begin manufacturing in Q4 2004.

QTL Biosystems, of Santa Fe, develops and markets bioassays that deliver superior sensitivity, specificity, and speed in simple-to-use formats with low total cost of detection. Bioassay products are available for the detection of viruses, toxins, bacteria, proteins, hormones, nucleic acids and other biological compounds.

United First Responders LLC, Fayette County, Pennsylvania manufactures products and provides training services for first responders, military and the private sector to detect bioterrorist threats.
