Reliant Energy Solutions launches Web-based energy management service

September 25, 2001—Texas-based Reliant Energy Solutions recently unveiled a new Internet-based system designed to assist large commercial and industrial customers in managing their energy consumption and costs. The energy management system, called Energy Commander, allows customers to view real-time energy usage via the Internet.

Energy Commander is an integrated set of Web-delivered tools that collect and analyze energy consumption and facility information. Electronic devices relay detailed information about a customer’s energy usage to the Energy Commander system, which analyzes and displays the data using charts and tables. Customers view that information by going to the Reliant Energy Solutions Internet portal. Energy Commander is compatible with customer equipment and does not alter operations.

Energy Commander can monitor and record events such as outages, voltage sags, and other power quality problems. In such circumstances, the system can immediately notify customers in the form of pager messages, e-mails, or faxes to individuals or groups. By using Energy Commander’s special alarm capabilities, a customer can control their real-time energy demand and energy usage by turning off lights, shutting down equipment, or raising thermostat settings. All of these functions can be controlled remotely through the Internet.
