Renewable energy adds generating capacity to California

July 16, 2001—Three new power projects in California recently went online, adding more than 39 MW of energy to the state.

The first, a refurbished 25-megawatt (MW) biomass power plant near Fresno, is being managed by El Paso Corporation and went online two weeks ahead of schedule. The second, four massive water pumps that were converted to generators at Diamond Valley Lake by the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California, will provide a total of 13 MW of capacity. MWD plans to convert eight more pumps soon to increase the generating capacity to 40 MW. Finally, Henwood Energy Services Inc. announced that a 1.35 MW hydroelectric facility is now online near San Diego. The facility is powered by treated wastewater that drops 90 feet from the Point Loma wastewater treatment plant prior to being released into the ocean.
