May 1, 2002—According to a new report, energy management solutions implemented by just one company—Johnson Controls Inc.—and its customers between 1990 and 2000 are expected to reduce electricity use by 166 million megawatt hours over the life of the projects. That’s enough electrical power to run every household in California for more than two years. Estimates are based on an average contract lifetime of fifteen years.
The report—by the Leonardo Academy, a nonprofit environmental organization—indicates that Johnson Controls will save nonresidential customers $16.7 billion in energy costs through improvements implemented over the past decade. It estimates the energy reductions from all Johnson Controls projects implemented between 1990 and 2000 have the potential to prevent carbon dioxide emissions created at power generating plants by 217 million tons.
The report focuses on projects implemented in K-12 schools, universities, health care institutions, commercial and industrial buildings, retail stores, local and federal government, and other nonresidential facilities. It was commissioned by Johnson Controls to assess the impact of its energy savings and emissions reductions.
