May 19, 2008—A new report from the Uptime Institute and McKinsey & Company outlines some top-level changes for companies to take if they want to make real reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and energy use.
A major recommendation is for companies to consider the total cost of ownership when purchasing new IT equipment as well as when maintaining existing machines, in order to obtain a realistic picture. The report also advocates creating a new position (or “Energy Czar”) to monitor the efficiency and performance of the entire IT department.
In addition, the report proposes creating a rating system for data center energy efficiency, similar to the federal Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency standards for auto manufacturers. It also recommends forming a new CADE standard (Corporate Average Data Efficiency), which would combine the efficiency of IT hardware with the total energy use of the facility.
