In response to an International Facility Management Association finding that 50 percent of surveyed FMs are not knowledgeable about the benefits of carpet cushion, the Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam (AFPF) recently published a report called “How to get the most out of your carpet: A facility manager’s report on carpet cushion for the workplace.”
The report advocates using commercial polyurethane cushion—a thin, high density, resilient padding—to extend carpet life and improve appearance retention According to studies cited in the report, carpet cushion under office carpet can increase the life expectancy of carpet by up to 50 percent. By helping carpet last longer, the padding allows for less frequent replacement, thereby saving money in the long term. In a nationwide study of 57 carpeted workrooms, the median cost of direct glue-down installation was found to be higher than installation over separate carpet cushion when the expenses of floor preparation, carpet removal, and floor repair were considered.
Other benefits of carpet cushioning that the report mentions include: enhanced plushness; less ambient noise in offices; better thermal insulation; and reduced stress on the lower legs and feet of occupants.
