The memberships of Building Officials and Code Administrators International, Inc. (BOCA), International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO), and Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc. (SBCCI) will be considering resolutions dealing with the timeline for merger of these organizations into the International Code Council (ICC) at their respective annual business meetings this fall.
An affirmative vote on the plan by BOCA, ICBO, and SBCCI members at the Sept. 29 – Oct. 3, 2002 Joint Conference would authorize the implementation of the plan and the merger of the organizations by Jan. 2003.
The merger’s goal would be to create a single model code organization. To date, agreements have been reached on several key components. The first was the consolidation of the certification programs. Eleven of these jointly sponsored certification examinations are already available and are offered by the model code organizations at facilities throughout the United States. An additional fifteen examinations will be phased in over the next two years. The agreement provides for reciprocity of certifications, which are issued by the model code organizations, as well as national standardization of certification renewal requirements.
Other issues that have been discussed include bylaws, internal structure of the future organization, regional locations, personnel, membership needs, and organizational services.
