March 24, 2004—Oganizations throughout the U.S., joined with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) supported efforts to increase public awareness of workplace safety during the May 2-8 North American Occupational Safety and Health Week (NAOSH). The group is urging other organizations and the general public to do the same.
The Intersociety Forum represents several organizations including the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses, the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, the American Board for Occupational Health Nursing, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygiene, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the American Society of Safety Engineers, the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics, the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental Safety Technologists, the National Environmental Health Association and the National Safety Council.
Every year more than 5000 people die in the U.S. from job-related injuries and tens of thousands more die from occupational disease. Transportation incidents are the number one cause of on-the-job deaths.
