August 26, 2002—Signing off on the largest Utah Power Blue Sky energy agreement to date, Salt Lake City Corporation began reducing carbon dioxide emissions by ninety-four tons each month with a contract for 350 blocks (35,000 kilowatt-hours) of Blue Sky wind energy each month. The purchase applies to the energy used at the historic City and County Building.
Utah Power launched Blue Sky in 2000 to give residential and business customers an opportunity to purchase pollution-free wind power. Customers have the option of purchasing 100-kilowatt-hour blocks of renewable energy for $2.95 per month in addition to their regular electricity usage.
This year, Blue Sky climbed from seventh to sixth on the US Department of Energy’s Top 10 list of green utility programs in terms of customer participation. In Utah, 3,695 residential and business customers participate in Blue Sky, bringing the total number in Western states to 8,993.
