November 26, 2001—The San Diego City Council has approved a partnership agreement with Cardiac Science, Inc. that will promote the implementation of automated external defibrillators in the region. Automated External Defibrillators deliver an electric shock to the heart to halt sudden cardiac arrest, and restore a normal heart rhythm. Studies have shown the survival rate increases to upwards of 30 to 70 percent when an automated external defibrillator is available and used on a victim within 3 minutes from the onset of cardiac arrest. According to Deputy Fire Chief Augie Ghio, who oversees the City’s Public Access Defibrillation Program, the goal is to improve the survivability of sudden cardiac arrest victims in San Diego by placing defibrillators in all city facilities as well as local businesses, healthcare facilities and public schools. The program has already received initial funding of $100,000 to purchase and place 40 of the units in lifeguard towers and vehicles, recreation centers, libraries, and other city facilities. Under the terms of the marketing partnership agreement, Cardiac Science has been named the “Official Automated External Defibrillator Partner” of the City of San Diego.
