Sarnafil roof protects Olympic Ice Oval, gains LEED rating

December 19, 2001—Sarnafil Inc., a manufacturer of thermoplastic roofing and waterproofing systems, was chosen to provide the roof of the Olympic Ice Oval, also known as Oquirrh Park, for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Sarnafil EnergySmart Roof kept the concrete base of the building dry during construction in order to produce a uniform base for a smooth sheet of ice for the Olympic speed skaters.

Sarnafil’s white, reflective roof was also chosen to meet the standards of the LEED (“Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design”) Rating System, which evaluates environmental performance from a whole building perspective over a building’s life cycle, providing a definitive standard for what constitutes a “green building.” To be designated as an LEED-rated building by the US Green Building Council, the roof needs to remain cool in hot weather. Sarnafil’s roof helped the Utah Olympic Oval became one of only 19 buildings worldwide with an LEED certification.

The white roof was also selected for its color, which Sarnafil complemented with a custom color Olympic logo to further distinguish what will be a landmark building of the 2002 Winter Olympic games. Other Utah buildings with Sarnafil roofs include the Delta Center, Temple Square, and Weber State University.
