January 4, 2002—The Small Business Survival Committee (SBSC), one of the nation’s leading national small business advocacy organizations, has released its list of developments that had the best and worst impact on small businesses in 2001. The list includes economic, policy, and cultural factors. Among the developments that most affected facilities management were:
- Sharply lower energy prices.
- A repeal of ergonomic rules and regulations.
- Heightened need for security following September 11th.
- Blackouts in California that forced facilities to conserve energy.
Other factors that strongly influenced small businesses in general were the Bush tax cut, deep interest rate cuts, and the overall economic recession, SBSC said.
