Schlumberger RMS delivers nation’s largest time-of-day program

On April 25, 2001, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission approved a time-of-day rate plan for Puget Sound Energy to be delivered by Schlumberger Resource Management Services (RMS), a business segment of Schlumberger Ltd.

The plan, which wirelessly relays energy usage information in real time to the utility, is the nation’s first online service that provides consumers daily information regarding how their usage habits affect the price they pay for energy.

According to Schlumberger, time-of-day plans can help dramatically reduce energy costs. The Electric Power Research Institute estimates that just a 2.5-percent demand reduction at peak periods this past summer would have reduced wholesale prices by 24 percent. This would have translated into a savings of $700 million in electricity costs for California utilities.
