The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reports that the need for school construction and modernization assistance has found its way onto several election ballots along the Pacific Coast early in 2001. In Washington, ballot initiatives to provide more than $800 million for capital construction and modernization planning have appeared in Seattle and Tacoma alone. In California, Los Angeles County citizens will vote on a bond initiative that could provide the Los Angeles Community College system with $1.2 billion for construction and renovation funding.
AIA attributes increased funding for school construction to recent education reforms that seek reduced class sizes and increase classroom technology.
