Scottish energy generators gearing up for increase in renewable power generation

April 18, 2003—Scottish energy generators and the energy regulator Ofgem on April 9 announced plans to begin the first phase of a comprehensive overhaul of the transmission system to meet the UK government’s targets for renewable energy generation, without waiting for the price review in 2005, according to the UK’s Department of Trade and Industry.

Scottish and Southern in the North, and Scottish Power in the South, have been given the go-ahead to begin upgrading the infrastructure for renewable power. Both energy companies have outlined major investment plans that will upgrade the transmission networks they operate, and allow renewable energy generated in the northerly regions of the British Isles to be transmitted to the rest of the UK.
