Scottish research confirms that well-designed buildings have many benefits

August 21, 2006—New research has confirmed that well-designed buildings can improve staff performance, create new jobs and even attract new investment.

In a study commissioned by the Scottish Executive, consultants reviewed more than 100 research reports compiled over the past decade by leading academics and professional architectural institutions in the UK, Europe, Canada and New Zealand.

The main findings highlighted the economic and health benefits associated with well-designed buildings. Significant social and environmental benefits were also identified.

Scottish Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson commented: “We all want to live and work in buildings that are attractive and convenient to use and which we enjoy being in.

“I hope this report can act as a catalyst that will encourage innovative, creative and user-friendly architectural design that will improve the lives of communities throughout Scotland.”
