November 1, 2002—Sempra Energy Solutions, the retail-marketing arm of Sempra Energy, has been awarded a $98 million, 20-year energy-services contract by the General Services Administration (GSA), the federal government entity that is building the new 2.3 million-square-foot campus for the Food and Drug Administration headquarters in Silver Spring, Md.
Because the FDA needs a fully reliable supply of electricity, Sempra will also construct a central utility plant using combined heat and power technology. The project incorporates renewable energy, as well, through the use of photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight into electricity.
The plant will be built in a historic fire station and vehicle maintenance shop facade to maintain a consistent architecture for the campus.
The overall campus ultimately will be composed of five groups of interconnected buildings and their shared infrastructure with 6,200 employees.
