April 10, 2002—The US Senate has resumed debate on national energy policy legislation (S. 517), which includes an amendment that would add $16 billion in energy tax incentives.
The tax incentive measure would provide:
- $2.1 billion in incentives for the use of alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles;
- $2.4 billion in conservation and energy-efficiency incentives, including deductions of up to $2.25/sq. ft. for energy-efficient commercial buildings;
- $1.9 billion in clean coal incentives; and
- $4.6 billion in tax breaks aimed at the oil and gas industry.
