August 15, 2007—Siemens Power Generation (PG) recently announced it will supply 25 offshore wind turbines with a combined capacity of 90 megawatts (MW) to the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm off the Wales coast of the UK. The purchaser is RWE npower, the UK arm of RWE AG. The construction of the Rhyl Flats Offshore Wind Farm, Siemens’ fourth project in the UK, is scheduled to be completed by mid 2009.
Siemens PG will install and commission 25 of its SWT-3.6-107 type turbines and will also assume responsibility for service and maintenance for an initial period of five years. Once operational, Rhyl Flats, along with its neighbor North Hoyle, will reportedly produce enough clean electricity to meet the needs of over 100,000 homes.
The Rhyl Flats project is located west of the Burbo Offshore Wind Farm, where Siemens has just finished erecting another 25 wind turbines, likewise with a capacity of 3.6 MW each. Following commissioning and connection to the power grid, the Burbo project will start commercial operation by the end of this year, supplying environmentally friendly power to more than 80,000 households, says Siemens.
