April 28, 2003—Illinois has won the 2002 Site Selection magazine Governor’s Cup, which the Atlanta-based magazine awards annually to the US state with the most new and expanded corporate facilities as tracked by Conway Data Inc.’s New Plant database.
New Plant focuses on new corporate location projects with significant impact. Site Selection does not track retail and government projects, or schools and hospitals. New facilities and expansions included in the analyses must meet at least one of three criteria: (1) involve a capital investment of at least $1 million, (2) create at least fifty new jobs, or (3) add at least 20,000 square feet of new floor area.
Illinois surpassed Michigan’s total number of new and expanded facilities by just three projects—835 to Michigan’s 832. New York finished third with 812 projects.
The top three metropolitan areas for new and expanded facilities in 2002 were Chicago, Detroit, and Cincinnati.
