June 16, 2003—Sitmatic’s Copernicus is a desk and chair built on a single structure. Folding to only 13″, Copernicus reportedly yields a 40% increase in seating capacity over swing seat seating at the same cost. A full worksurface is available for laptop use, rather than balancing a computer on a folding tablet arm. The table and seat heights can be adjusted along the uprights for stepped floors. The seat and back are of cross-laminated beechwood, and can be upholstered with replaceable cushions. The structure is epoxy-coated steel.
The transverse beams in the structure allow for flexible and precise location of desks and chairs to permit curved rows and placement on bowed floors. Using the transverse beams as cabling channels, the whole system can be power and data capable with outlets and jacks discretely placed on the face of the beams.
