Solar projects to help relieve electric load congestion in Connecticut

April 14, 2003—The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) recently selected its Photovoltaic (PV) Program Request for Proposal finalists. These projects represented total investments of $3.6 million and requested $2.3 million in funding support. They will coordinate the development of solar power projects that carry investments in excess of $1 million in total costs and will result in additional solar PV capacity of approximately 100 kilowatts.

The projects are:

  • The Fairfield Water Pollution Control & Compost Facility will integrate solar power into a new compost processing facility at the existing water pollution control facility and will complement other distributed power-generation.
  • The City of Hamden will install solar-powered traffic light.
  • The Stamford Katrina Mygatt Recycling Center will utilize solar energy to power its facility lighting.
  • The Hamden Government Center project will use solar power to charge it’s backup battery, provide emergency lighting, and provide power to the electric grid.
  • The Whitneyville Pumping Station in Hamden will use solar power during critical peak summer periods.
  • The Salmon Brook Ecology Center’s solar system will integrate with a self-sustaining aquaculture/hydroponics green facility.
  • CT Transit in Hartford will incorporate energy efficiency measures with solar power in a bus maintenance facility to help improve the economics of PV projects.
