July 20, 2026 – In June, the labor market grew less than expected, with employers adding 57,000 new positions and unemployment dropping lower to 4.2 percent, as hiring continues. However, the Labor Department revised down the healthier job gains in April and May by 74,000, indicating the labor market was weaker than previously thought this spring. In effect, April’s job count was 148,000 (not 179,000) and May’s figure was 129,000 (not 172,000).
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its June report on July 2, ahead of the holiday weekend for the 4th. Professional and business services added 36,000 positions, improving over the 2025 numbers.
