November 19, 2001—Square D, a brand of electrical distribution, industrial control, and automation products, recently unveiled new infrared windows that can be installed in electrical equipment to help locate faulty components before they cause costly downtime problems.
The H.VIR COMET Infrared Inspection Window allows electrical inspections to be performed without shutdowns or the danger of electric shock. It can detect abnormal heat in electrical systems—a sign of potential electrical problems. Made of a glass-like material, the window lets maintenance engineers record the internal temperatures of equipment while it is energized, without exposure to the live components.
The complete UL-approved unit is permanently fitted to electrical equipment such as medium and low voltage switchboards, transformers, and generator control panels. Various viewing area diameters are available up to four inches and in short or long wave lengths. For large or complex electrical line-ups, engineers from Square D can help determine the optimum configuration and provide installation drawings, which can then be installed by Square D’s nationwide network of technicians. The company recommends infrared scanning in conjunction with a standard periodic maintenance and testing program to improve equipment reliability.
