February 6, 2002—Saint Josephs Medical Center in Yonkers, N.Y., is among the first of three hospitals in the nation to receive the prestigious Energy Star label from the Environmental Protection Agency. The hospital was recognized for reducing its operational and energy expenditures by more than $248,000 annually. The savings will total more than $2.4 million over the next 10 years through a performance contract with Johnson Controls Inc.
The challenge for Saint Josephs was to address the issues associated with its aging buildings, while continuing to provide patients and 1,000 employees with a safe, clean, comfortable environment and improving energy consumption. The medical center facilities, including its 194-bed hospital and 200-bed nursing home, encompass approximately 341,000 square feet.
“Saint Joseph’s worked diligently with Johnson Controls over the past three years and successfully implemented energy savings measures,” says Michael J. Spicer, president and CEO of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center.
Saint Josephs improved the indoor environment for patients and employees with the help of a new Metasys building automation system, a complete lighting retrofit and the installation of variable speed drives, isolation dampers and retrofit steam traps. In addition, the hospital reduced its carbon dioxide emissions significantly. For more information, contact Johnson Controls.
