St Paul’s renovation wins RICS project of the year

November 16, 2009—RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) recently named the overall, international winners of its 2009 Awards, drawing from the previous award winners from various regions of the British Isles as well as international entries.

RICS Award winners must show both excellence in their category, and a commitment to value for money and sustainability. The awards recognize a full spectrum of organizations and projects worldwide, of all sizes. RICS says each winner demonstrates how property professionals employ their skills to develop, regenerate, and conserve the environment in which we live and work.

Project of the Year was awarded to the renovation of St Paul’s Cathedral. The 40m renovation program of St Paul’s Cathedral began in 2000, with the twin goals of restoring the Cathedral for its 300th anniversary in 2008 and preparing it for the next century of its life. The restoration aimed to make future maintenance as organized and cost effective as possible, and to make the most of the available internal spaces to provide increased facilities for worshippers, visitors, and staff.

The other category winners are:

  • Regeneration: Liverpool One;
  • Sustainability: Bond University, Mirvac School of Sustainable Development;
  • Building Conservation: Clavell Tower; and
  • Community Benefit: Sacriston Surgery.

Details of the award winners, including Commended projects, are available on the RICS Awards 2009 Web page. Past winners include St. Pancras station in London, Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, the Eden Project in Cornwall, and the site of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
