September 19, 2001—According to a report from the British Workplace Representation and Participation Survey, only 49% of the UK workforce look forward to going to work on an average day.
This compares to 66% of the US workforce in a comparable study by Richard Freeman, one of the reports authors.
The extensive poll of workers, covering their attitudes to their jobs, trade unions and their employers, showed that one in ten of the workforce (9%) say they work very hard in jobs they do not enjoy and to which they do not look forward.
The report, What workers want from workplace organisations, also indicated that almost half the workforce is now paid in some way that relates to their employers performance. Preferential treatment by management was the biggest complaint at work, very closely followed by unfair wages.
