October 11, 2006—Citing the company’s increasing commitment to socially responsible investing, sustainability reporting, and community engagement, the Ceres board of directors recently approved Boston-based State Street Corp. as the newest company to join the Ceres network.
State Street, international provider of financial services to institutional investors, joined Ceres to help advance its corporate responsibility efforts. Ceres is a national coalition of investors, environmental groups, and other public interest organizations working with companies to address environmental and social challenges. Ceres has more than 70 companies in its company network, including 18 Fortune 500 companies.
State Street has recently made significant progress in reducing its environmental footprint and addressing critical social issues. The company produces annual corporate responsibility reports, recently modeling them after the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). In 2005, State Street developed a management system to monitor its environmental impacts. The company measures its own direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, including tracking miles traveled by employees and calculating the overall emissions of employee travel.
