January 21, 2005—StrionAir announced that its patented air-purification system has obtained test results that confirm its effectiveness against diesel exhaust. The testing was performed by the Center for Transportation Research at the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory operated by the University of Chicago.
Diesel exhaust represents an indoor-air-quality hazard to buildings throughout the world. Points of entry vary by facility and building activity, but the most common sources of diesel-exhaust infiltration include underground loading docks, attached warehouses and parking garages, HVAC air intakes (especially at street level) and helipads.
According to Bruce Dawson, President and CEO of StrionAir, “Remediating an IAQ problem caused by diesel exhaust used to be extraordinarily expensive, requiring the type of high-cost filtration equipment associated with clean rooms. The tests performed by Argonne National Lab have confirmed that our affordable solution is highly effective at minimizing the hazards and perceived odor associated with this pervasive pollutant.”
Dr. Thad Ptak, StrionAir VP of R&D adds that “Diesel exhaust is a complex mixture of hundreds of gasses and very fine particulate matter. The particles are especially problematic because they carry many of the harmful organic materials and heavy metals that result from combustion. Likewise, these particles carry hydrocarbons that are responsible for the characteristic diesel odor. They are extremely small, enabling them to penetrate into the deepest sections of the lungs where they can cause the most serious health effects.”
Standard air filtration technologies are ineffective against such fine particles, but Argonne Labs verified StrionAir’s ability to remove these ultra fine particles, sized between 0.01 and 0.3 micron, at a rate of more than 95%.
The diesel results from Argonne National Labs are the latest addition to the growing list of prestigious third-party test results that support the superior efficacy of the StrionAir System. Previously reported test results include capturing and killing a number of airborne pathogens including bacteria, molds and the bioterror agent Anthrax.
One of the features of the StrionAir system is that it is easily installed in existing or new air handlers at a much lower resistance to airflow than existing filtration systems and generally pays for itself in about a year based on energy and other operating savings.
