Study: Many commercial real estate professionals say they feel prepared, but haven’t tested disaster plans

October 4, 2006—Five years after 9/11 and one year after Hurricane Katrina, most commercial real estate professionals say they feel adequately prepared for disaster. However, 40 percent said they have never conducted exercises to test their disaster plans, making them the lowest ranked in disaster preparedness among six private sector industries surveyed. The entertainment industry (primarily entertainment venues and amusement parks) ranked only marginally higher with 37 percent reporting they had never conducted exercises.

The findings are part of a survey commissioned by the National Emergency Response & Rescue Training Center (NERRTC), a division of The Texas A&M University System’s Texas Engineering Extension Service, that aimed to uncover trends in disaster preparation efforts at large companies across six key industries – commercial real estate, health care, energy, chemical, entertainment and transportation.
