Survey: 20 percent of UK businesses not prepared for fire-related incident

October 13, 2006—A fifth of UK businesses are unprepared for a fire-related incident according to a new survey by health and safety company Croner.

The survey shows two-thirds of businesses could do more to improve overall fire safety. Many employers are also unaware of recent new fire legislation.

A staggering 19% don’t carry out spontaneous fire evacuation drills, and 17% don’t make visitors aware of fire procedures.

Trevor Davies, health and safety officer at Croner, said: “The alarming level of complacency among businesses suggests they are taking an ostrich approach to fire safety, even though they seem to recognize that they should be doing more.”

Croner provides reliable support for legal compliance and best practice in the areas of human resources, health and safety, environmental management, local and central government, education, trade and transport. For more information, see the Web site.
