November 14, 2001—Recent research by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) explores how interior design affects office productivity. The survey, Workplace Values: How Employees Want to Work, co-sponsored by Ecophon, Haworth and Vista Window Film, focuses specifically what helps or hinders employees as they go about their work.
According to ASID, respondents focused on comfort, communication, access, and functional efficiency. Whereas managers tend to emphasize workplace characteristics that support the individual worker, employees in the survey often raised issues about working with their colleagues, whether one-on-one or in groups. They view the workplace more in terms of the people with whom and through whom their work must get done, and they value a workplace that gives them the means to collaborate.
