February 23, 2005—Too many businesses still need to do more to prepare themselves for the possibility of a terrorist attack, concludes a survey of 500 members of the Institute of Directors, a nonpolitical organization that provides business services to more than 55,000 members.
The survey showed that directors have adopted a variety of security measures in recent years, including checking the references and documentation of staff and contractors when recruiting and hiring; carrying out a risk assessment to identify possible threats and to assess their vulnerability to attack; and taking steps to improve the physical security of buildings.
However, 49 percent of the businesses surveyed did not have any contingency plans to help them cope with a terrorist attack and 23 percent spent little or nothing on security, according to the survey.
