January 28, 2005—Technical Glass Products now offers a new breed of wired glass, Pilkington Pyroshield Plus, that offers impact safety in addition to fire protection. The company notes that the traditional wired glass used for fire-rated openings in schools and commercial facilities performs well in fire situations but does not resist impact well. When broken, the wires in the glass can create dangerous snags that can cause serious injuries.
The International Code Council (ICC) recently changed the International Building Code (IBC), requiring all glass in hazardous locations to satisfy Consumer Product Safety Commission impact safety requirements. Traditional wired glass will no longer be an option for hazardous locations in schools, athletic facilities, daycare centers, or other settings where it will be exposed to frequent human contact.
Pilkington Pyroshield Plus provides an affordable alternative to meet safety needs. The product is formed by taking traditional wired glass and laminating it with a special interlayer to another layer of clear glass. This gives Pilkington Pyroshield Plus the strength to meet the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s impact safety standard, CPSC 16CFR1201 (Category I).
Pilkington Pyroshield Plus does not rely on a surface film to achieve its impact rating. The company says there is no need to worry about the vandalism and maintenance issues associated with filmed products, making Pilkington Pyroshield Plus an ideal substitute for traditional wired glass in hazardous locations, such as busy school corridors.
Pilkington Pyroshield Plus is listed with Underwriters Laboratories and carries fire ratings up to 90 minutes in doors and up to 45 minutes in other applications. It is available in either diamond or square mesh patterns, can be cut to size, and is readily available for quick shipment throughout the US and Canada.
